A new breakthrough treatment is giving hope to spinal cord injury victims. Four men that were paralyzed from the chest down were able to get out of their wheelchairs for the first time ever. The paralyzed men had electrical stimulators implanted into their spines. Now, these men are working hard to learn how to walk again. But walking is not the only benefit of the surgical procedure. The men reported being able to have sex again and significantly control their bowel and bladder function.
Dustin Shillcox was one of those 4 men. Since he received his implant, he has been able to stand up for more than half an hour – something he never thought was physically possible after his accident 5 years ago.
The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is currently raising $15 million so that the procedure can be performed in dozens of other patients across the country. Since then, more than 4,000 people have signed up to take part in this exciting new treatment.
